San Francisco Secret Hotspots

Anyone can find the Golden Gate Bridge or the Lombard Street, but if you are willing to embrace the unknown, you will find that San Francisco is full of hidden gems. I lived for one year in San Francisco and through my time in the states it become one of my my favourite US cities. Here I want to share the best San Francisco Secret Hotspots.

Here are my favourite San Francisco Secret Hotspots:

Hippie Tree in Tiburon

The Hippie Tree is located in a town called Tiburon. It is a giant, climbable and old Eucalyptus tree. The landscape and scenery is amazing. From there you have a world-class view to Angel Island and the city. The highlight of this place is the tree swing – don’t forget to try the tree swing, it is a thrilling ride!

Here are the directions to the Hippie Tree:

  • Turn off Tiburon Boulevard onto Gilmartin Drive.
  • Park near 100 Gilmartin Drive.
  • Walk up the hill on the fire road to reach the Hippie Tree.
  • Entrance to the fire road is across from 100 Gilmartin Drive.

Kirby Cove

Kirby Cove is a campground and scenic area in the Marin Headlands in California. I think it is the best spot to escape the city and to relax. During my time in the US there were never a lot of tourists at Kirby Cove. One highlight was the marriage proposal that we saw. There was a heart made out of flowers on the beach. Perfect to take cool pictures.

Sausalito

A quick ferry ride away from San Francisco – the quaint town Sausalito. Most people arrive by ferry, walk or bike over the Golden Gate Bridge to reach the town. It is perfect for a day-trip from San Francisco. There you can look back across the Bay at the downtown skyline. This picturesque seaside town has the ambience of a European vacation resort, especially during summertime, with its quaint boutiques, upscale art galleries, scenic waterfront walk, and yacht-filled marinas.

Directions:

By ferry: The ferry departs from the San Francisco Ferry Building, a worthwhile destination in itself, especially for foodies who will find many unique gourmet shops and artisanal bakeries. The ferry takes approximately 30 minutes.

By bike: Most of the bike rental options are in the Marina District. It does not cost a lot of money to borrow a bike for one day. The route is about 12 kilometres.

Baker Beach

One of my favourite Spots in San Francisco is Baker Beach. It is a great escape right in the city. Most people go to Baker Beach just to take a walk and enjoy the views, but you’ll also find people fishing in the ocean. People also go sunbathing at the beach, and the end nearest the bridge is a very busy clothing-optional area. It is also nice to be there during summer time to see the sunset in the evening.

It provides panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands and Lands End.
